Lower Withington WI Report, November

Home » Newsroom » Lower Withington WI , November

This was our AGM when new members were nominated for the committee and a new chairman was voted in.

Ann Daughtrey was voted in as chairman once again. Molly Kennerley stepped down from the committee and was given a gift of flowers as she has served on and off the committee for thirty years. Karen Hilton and Sue Kennerley are new committee members.

We also had a big birthday and Angela Barnshaw was given a lovely plant.

Our speaker was Dorothy Nicolle with a talk on English Pub Signs. She did a power point presentation accompanied by an excellent talk on the origins of pub signs. Sadly a lot of these are disappearing as we loose what was one of the centres of the community, the pub. The Romans started the whole thing by hanging a vine outside their drinking establishments to show that wines were available and from there the tradition grew. As a window into history the pub sign is often bypassed but we shall all look more carefully in future to see what the sign, often a mini work of art, is telling us about the place or person depicted. Dorothy has written an excellent book on the subject.

Our next meeting is our party on 14th. December which this year is for members only.
