Chelford Parish Council
Chelford Parish Council comprises seven Councillors elected to represent the interests of village residents. Unlike Cheshire East Council (CEC), the Parish Council does not have a legal duty to deliver services. However, as an elected tier of local government, it has the legal power to take action and a greater freedom to choose what action to take.
Parish Councillors play a vital part in representing the interests of the community and work to improve the quality of village life and the local environment. Through the Parish Council, they can influence other decision makers (e.g. CEC Planning) and can deliver specific services to meet local needs. The Parish Council raises money through taxation (the precept) to pay for such services.
Every four years all the seats on the Parish Council are up for election. If you have a time to spare and are interested in helping to support our local community in this unpaid capacity, you may wish to consider standing in the future. The next election will take place in May 2019 and will be advertised on the Parish Council notice board in the village centre. In the meantime casual vacancies sometimes occur between elections. These vacancies are also advertised on the noticeboard.
Parish Council meetings take place on the 2nd Thursday of every month. You are encouraged to come to meetings and listen to proceedings. At the start of each meeting there is an opportunity for residents to raise matters of concern or comment on the business listed in the agenda. Agendas and minutes appear on the web site.
The May meeting is the Annual General Meeting where officers of the Council are elected. Also in may we hold the 'Village Meeting' at which the Chairman gives his annual report followed by open discussions with residents.
The Parish Newsletter is produced each year, giving a brief overview of Parish Council business, news of village organisations and forthcoming events. Copies of this are delivered to all households in the village several weeks before the Village Meeting in May.
Chelford Parish Council supports the Chelford Village Website as part of the Parish Plan with the aim of encouraging better communication within the village. We want this to be 'the village website' in which everyone has an opportunity to contribute.
