An unusual and potentially disturbing sight currently visible on a clear evening an hour or so after sunset is a string of around 40 star-like objects slowly moving across the sky about twenty seconds after each other.
Not the start from H.G. Wells 'War of the Worlds' book, but an early batch of Starlink satellites recently launched into low-Earth orbit by Elon Musk's SpaceX company as part of a somewhat controversial plan to provide commercial global broadband internet coverage from space from eventually around 1,500 satellites.
For an impressive illustration of what is going on and where the satellites are tyou can visit www.heavens-above and under Satellites select Dynamic 3D display of all objects from the recent Starlink launch.
If you enter your location as Manchester,UK in the box at the top right then a detailed 10-day schedule can be obtained for when the satellites are visible from here (assuming of course a cloudless sky).
