Many thanks to Jim Evans for sending us this magnificent photograph (give it a click to enlarge!).
Jim says "With the help of several sites, we identified it by it blue abdomen and yellow markings as a male Broad-bodied Chaser dragonfly. The female is less brightly coloured apparently with a brown abdomen but the same yellow edges and the four black wing patches; we have yet to spot a female.
While widespread in the UK it may be more common in the south".
The dragonfly season in the UK begins in some of the warmer parts in April and can continue on well into Autumn. In June, you'll see many different types on the wing, especially on sunny days and near water. For a good guide to dragonflies, damselflies and their lifestyle, click here
